Sharing a Beer Bong with The Men

Music could be heard as we walked from our car that we parked on the side of the road. A ton of people were already at the party, so the driveway was full of cars and we had to make the hike from down the street. They had given the house a name as people like to do, and it was called Open Your Heart. It always seemed like a weird name to me. Then again, the people that lived there were called “The Men.” Even the girls that lived there were still referred to as “The Men.” I had heard about the party from a friend and realized that I had been to another thing The Men had thrown a year earlier in a different place. That one used to be called The Leave Home House. Those parties were a bit stranger and darker and from what I had heard, this new place seemed a bit more lively and fun.

Vivian Girls :: Share the Joy

Vivian Girls :: Share the Joy ~ Polyvinyl ~ Brooklyn, NY ~ April 11th 2011

The most compelling part of Share the Joy is it's sarcastic and honest female empowerment. As much of a bummer as it is to categorize a band as "girl rock," the group pigeonholes themselves to make a some feminist commentary on "the other girls" and on underground punk traditions. The pinnacle of this is during "Take it As it Comes," which, through the form of an audio sketch, advises the confidence-lacking, cell phone laden, love obsessed (and partially crazed) teen girls within all of us. Stylistically, Vivian Girls champion the genre with commentary such as the blazing guitar solos during their opening track "The Other Girls." It's also worth repeating that rarely ever does a band have such a well appropriated name, especially for this album. Vivian Girls were the creation of outside artist Henry Darger who could quite possibly not tell the difference between boys and girls and whose art was discovered in his recluse's apartment upon his death. The documentary In the Realms of the Unreal is fascinating and worth a watch.

VIDEO: Woods :: Death Rattles

A new video from Woods off of last year's At Echo Lake. The awkward medieval frolic nicely matches their intended death rattle.

Lizard Kisses :: Sleeping In

Lizard Kisses :: Sleeping In ~ Self-Released ~ Brooklyn, NY ~ October 20th, 2010
Click here to hold this.

A sweet little lo-fi pop duo from Brooklyn with a handful of songs that have emotionally charged vocals, interspersed with instrumentals. Cory Seigler sings of scenes that could all take place from a bed with a fluffy white blanket during the early morning, overexposed and shot with a dusty lens. They are sugary simple things like wasting the day Sleeping in, playing Nintendo, breaking up with someone in your sleep, and they even mention driving home from Worcester, MA (presumably...hopefully). They've got quite a good idea for the packaging for the EP. Each of the forty silk screened, hand pressed CDs each comes with their own unique polaroid photo.

Preview :: Prince Rama of Ayodhya BURSTS INTO LIGHT

Our buds from the Whitehaus, Prince Rama of Ayodhya, have signed to Animal Collective's label, Paw Tracks. Apparently Avey Tare is all over them. They are a trip. Pitchfork deems it so, so it must be legiiiiiiit. A shattering champagne bottle and Bon Voyage as they enter the third ring of the aether and on to a glimmering alternate dimension. Prepare for a cataclysmic merger of astral planes. Their first full length on Paw Tracks is tentatively called Shadow Temple. Listen and practice your levitation.
