More New Sufjan Stevens :: The Age of Adz :: 10/12

Really excited to find out that Sufjan Stevens has a full length coming out October 12th called The Age of Adz. I believe the "Adz" is pronounced like "Odds" but with a thick Boston accent. The cover for the album is exceedingly amazing. Apparently it's loosely based on the outsider artist Royal Robertson. A quick google search reveals that the "prophet's" works that look like this ::
go for about $800.
I'm going to write about this song and try not to go on a personal rant about how it seems that everyone seems to have to have their new album be an electronica discotheque massacre. It's like everybody just found out that loop pedals existed all at the same time. Don't get me wrong, people are doing some amazingly interesting things, but this just seems a little out of character for the Seven Swans Sufjan I first met and loved. Probably why he released that All Delighted People EP, so he could play with those other sounds too. I shouldn't get mad at him for wanting to play with some synthesizers for just one album, and apparently its got a lot to do with the cosmos and aliens, which is great...although if I have to wait five more years for another one...

Weird Stalk Was Awesome

Last Friday, August 20th, was Weird Stalk Too. Highlight of the night of course was when I was handed a guitar and asked to play some Rockabilly by the spastic otherworldly Cave Bears. Here's some more photos courtesy of Anti-Gravity Bunny. And Weird Stalk Tree...clever Mr. Bunny...they're definitely going to have to call it that.

New Sufjan Stevens EP :: STREAMING!

<a href="http://sufjanstevens.bandcamp.com/album/all-delighted-people-ep">All Delighted People (Original Version) by Sufjan Stevens</a>
Sufjan Stevens has a new EP called All Delighted People streaming right now from his bandcamp! At 60 mins its a pretty long EP. Long enough that it'll have to be a double 12". And there's at least one Simon and Garfunkle reference in there. Glad to see he got over his 50 states freak out. Sufjan Bandcamp

He's coming to Boston on November 11th:
Thursday, 11 November, 6:30pm ($33.50)
Orpheum Theatre, Boston MA
General admission goes on sale 8/13.
Mission Statement from Asthmatic Kitty:
"The EP, All Delighted People, is built around two different versions of Sufjan’s long-form epic ballad "All Delighted People," a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon’s "Sounds of Silence." Sounds delightful, yes! The song was originally workshopped (oh we hate making workshop a verb, but time is money!) on Sufjan’s previous tour in the fall of 2009. Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute guitar jam-for-single-mothers "Djohariah," and the gothic piano ballad "The Owl and the Tanager," a live-show mainstay (and Debbie Downer if you ask us; what’s it doing on a "Delighted" EP?). The full track list is available right here."
All Delighted People:

01 All Delighted People (Original Version)
02 Enchanting Ghost
03 Heirloom
04 From the Mouth of Gabriel
05 The Owl and the Tanager
06 All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version)
07 Arnika
08 Djohariah

Mount Eerie Compilation :: Song Islands, Vol. II

The Microphones and Mount Eerie can be marked by the plethora of non-album tracks, demos and stray recordings. From strange compilations to random 7" from the late 90's and beyond, a lot of stuff showed up from The Microphones on Song Islands Volume I. When The Glow Pt. II was reissued on vinyl, it came with an extra disc of outtakes and alternate versions of songs from that album that were equally interesting, that become poems and experimentations that trail off into a deep nothing. Song Islands Volume II catches stuff from The Glow Pt. II era up to Wind's Poem. One of my favorites from the bonus disc for The Glow Pt. II was called "Where Lies My Tarp?" and its the same version on this album. A little sad we didn't see "Lanterns" on this one.

Song Islands Vol. 2:
01 Where?
02 Calf in Pasture
03 The Intimacy
04 I Whale
05 O My Heart
06 Instrumental
07 Where Is My Tarp?
08 Don't Smoke
09 Get Off the Internet
10 Cooking
11 Give Totally Up
12 Do Not Be Afraid
13 Voice in Headphones (singers)
14 Cold Mountain
15 Cold Mountain's Song #286
16 Heart Lake at Night
17 You Turn Me On
18 A Sentimental Song
19 Mystery Language
20 Waterfalls
21 This Is the Same Ocean
22 In the Rain
23 In Moonlight
24 Thanksgiving
25 Instrumental
26 Uncertainty
27 Limp Climbing
28 Grave Robbers
29 Lost Wisdom

PREVIEW: Cloud Becomes Your Hand :: Cassette!

Stephen Cooper, of Brooklyn performance noise band Living Things, has just released a solo cassette under the intriguing and wonder inspiring name, Cloud Becomes Your Hand. It's got all the bizarre elements of Living Things that you know and love, but contained within a more song oriented structure. Each track has something different to offer, both spooky and joyous, blending digital and acoustic elements with glorious lo-fi production. The release is a tape on the newly minted cassette label of Canada Goose Tapes, a new project by Atomfoam of the Whitehaus.

Catch the group at Weirdstock II @ The Temple in Jamaica Plain on 8/20!

Belle & Sebastian :: Real Cover and TV Show

Belle and Sebastian's Belle and Sebastian Write About Love will be out October 12th. I knew the last cover wasn't quite right, because it was missing that solid color overlay. The group also apparently has got a TV show coming out. Check out a clip and a bit of the new song "I Want the World to Stop" below ::

This lady is touring with Girlfriends and I just heard this track and fell in love...with it...
It's a really interesting mix of drum machine, glorious fuzz guitar and siren vocals. She's got a purple cassette out on Suffering Jukebox called Milo Goes to Compton. The title is a nice Descendents reference.

Belle & Sebastian's New Album :: Write About Love

Belle and Sebastian's next album will be called Write About Love, as in "Belle and Sebastian write about love." Sounds like they're taking a risk writing about a topic rarely covered in pop music, but by God if anyone can do it, B an' S can.

They're doing something cool too. They want fans to take pictures or video of themselves writing "write about love" in public or secret places and then upload them to their flickr. Maybe they'll make a video out of it, which would be supercool. The cutest photo will also win some kind of mysterious 'trophy!'

No Age :: New Album :: Everything in Between

(via pitchfork.com)

No Age is releasing their third album on September 28th. Randy has said that they were experimenting with sound collage and tape looping, which is an exciting prospect. Also for eargesting is the Glitter single b-side, "Inflourescence."

They're releasing two singles for "Glitter." They're going to have a short and a long version of the song on a 7" and 12". The art is by Brian Roettinger.

Girlfriends :: Gov't Seizure 7" Single

<a href="http://girlfriendsband.bandcamp.com/album/govt-seizure">Gov&#39;t Seizure by girlfriends</a>

“Smart, decade bending, sarcaso surf-creeps”

Coming off their freshly awarded medal of honor from the Boston Phoenix as best garage act, Girlfriends have released the 7” single Gov’t Seizure.

The single song is a speedy side-winding cobweb drawl that groovily drags its feet at the end.  The B-Side “Creep Stuff” is just as much fun as a lazy tempo experiment. The way the band records themselves is really key to the sound. It wouldn't be the same if it was cleaner. Just like their self-titled cassette, the overdriven vocals and white noise splashes from cymbals and amps punctuate both the sound and the lyrics, recalling some older decades. The production also has a few interesting subtle touches, like spontaneous laughter, coughing and rhythmic gargling.

MANNERS : White Wool Fog or the Cave of Light Within LP

<a href="http://manners.bandcamp.com/album/white-wool-fog-or-the-cave-of-light-within">WILL PT 1 by M A N N E R S</a>
MANNERS :: 'Cave Pt. 1'

"A woolly mammoth meditating"

The thing that gets your attention about MANNERS' White Wool Fog or The Cave of Light Within is the fact that it's a cassette and a tuft of dirty wool tied together with orange yarn. When asked about it, songwriter Greg Beson said, "It's just stuff that I like," which makes sense if you know the naturalist, farmer, botanist, stone skipper of Portland, Maine.

Bright Eyes Sound Strike Tune :: Coyote Song // Live Desaparecidos

This is Conor Oberst's protest song for soundstrike.net against the Arizona immigration legislation, played live. Kind of reminds me of "Napoleon's Hat." There should be a real video coming soon. This has me thinking of the mysterious "last Bright Eyes album ever" due out supposedly this fall. I haven't heard anything about it since Rolling Stone last year. WHERE IS IT SEÑOR OBERST!?
Also here's some video of the Desaparecidos reunion:
