Spring/Summer 2012 8tracks

I meant to make a mix for each season, but I forgot all about it due to my travels in Budapest, Prague, and Berlin. So, here's a recap spring and summer mix. The photo is the sunrise outside of Berghain in Berlin.
The mix is 17 songs with Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Purity Ring, and Japandroids.

Emperor X, Music Scientist Ph.D and Transdimensional Explorer

published on thebomberjacket.com

Some records have lyrics so ambiguously specific that one can’t help but notice hints of a storyline or something that ties all the mysterious pieces together. Such albums inspire listeners to spin the record endlessly, trying to decode the messages into some kind of concrete interpretation or narrative. Emperor X's latest album Western Teleport (Bar/None) is a perfect example.

It only makes sense considering their creator Chad Matheny’s own sci-fi affinity for imagining alternate realities. The concept is omnipresent in every aspect of his music. For fourteen years, Emperor X has been releasing independent records and going on guerilla tours across the US. He’s even in another dimension when it comes to promotion and marketing, as he has been burying demo cassettes all across the country for a number of years now.

VIDEO: Emperor X :: Nervous Energies Session

Emperor X recently did a video session for a little cassette and vinyl label and weekly session filmer. The site is called Nervous Energies. http://www.ryanrussell.net/nervousenergies/

Emperor X's Chad Matheny had this to say: "My friend Ryan Russell and I recorded an E.X set in front of a blazing steel furnace in an industrial zone in Birmingham last month. An older Southern gentlemen came over and asked Ryan's girlfriend if we were "environmentalists or something," and assured her with odd enthusiasm that the fumes coming up off of the furnace were clean and pure. Then we had Chinese food. It was a great day."

Emperor X is Chad Matheny's one man pop songs with flares of guitar, electronics, and inventive rhythms. He's been playing underground scenes for a decade, since he ditched the physics degree. A lot of the lyrics reflect his previous career path. The Blythe Archives Volumes I & II from 2008 and 2009 feature some of his catchiest and well penned tunes to date.

Along with the album, Emperor X has hidden "nodes" all across the US. In order to "play" you have to first buy the album, which is the easy part. Then you have to find a node, which consists of a translucent purple audio cassette and activate it for exclusive content from the Western Teleport sessions. Matheny did something similar for The Blythe Archives releases. It's a great way to make music more personal, as well as an adventure. Check out westernteleport.com for node locations and discoveries.

Emperor X :: Burying Music in the Dirt, A Geocaching Adventure

One of the coolest things I've ever heard someone doing in the name of promotions, Emperor X will be burying cassettes of some demos that could possibly never be heard by human ears. He's going to post the GPS coordinates online and whoever finds the tape gets to keep it. There will also be codes for secret downloads too apparently. Kudos Mr. X.

There's this cool thing in Boston called Sleepover shows. Recently Emperor X did  a session with those guys and it was great. Here's a video from it of "Approximately Nine Billion Tigers." That's right, Raisin Bran is an instrument.
